mehmet desde writes back from a high security prison in turkey...

for all of you who took action and wrote holiday cards to prisoners of conscience i thought i'd share this with you...

happy holidays and peace out <3

Thought I would pass along some news. A few days ago, I received a registered letter from Turkey. Turns out Mehmet Desde, one of the prisoners highlighted in the holiday card action, replied to my letter, and wrote a response. His action is the one that tells AI folks to write only in Turkish, and provides a phrase to write. His letter includes both an English section, and a translation in Turkish. In English, he writes:

Dear Mary,

I took your a card. Thank you very much. I'm fine. I'm in a high security prison. I wish you a merry christmas and a Happy New Year.

Prisoner of freedom,

Mehmet Desde

I, too, received a note from Mehmet, and was moved to think of him there in prison. Let us each remember the persecuted among us by taking action however and whenever we can!

I got this from Mehmet: "Dear Gloria-Jeanne, I took your letter. Thank you very much. Thank you for your support and solidarity. Many people expressed solidarity with me. Whatever they think, I'm not guiilty. I'm a political prisoner. I'm in a highsecurity prison. I stay with three friends in a room. We don't see another prisoner. We live ini complete isolation from one another. I don't take English letter but I write and send English letter. Wishing you peace and happiness for the futuree. I want to my liberty. Prisoner of Freedom, Mehmet Desde, 10 January 2008.....much love....."

It was stamped with some sort of blue ink. Probably to keep track of who he writes to and what he says. Cookie Anderson, aka Gloria-Jeanne

The blue ink stamp meant the letter was inspected by the “letter-reading association of Alanya” - part of the prison bureaucracy.

You can reply. Mehmet Desde can only receive letters in Turkish. The web site www.stars21.com/translator will translate Engish to Turkish -- probably not elegant Turkish, but Turkish.

I received the same letter as Cookie Anderson, dated 17 April, except that mine said he was with TWO friends, not three.

Have received my 3rd letter from Mehmet Desde. I've been writing him back.

He has been moved to another prison; his new address is
B Tipi Kapali Cezaevi
Tire Izmir

He can now receive letters in English.

I have received two letters from Mehmet, the last one received yesterday, dated June 16, 2008 and in blue ink. I have been writing him in English, with phrases in Turkish. In his letter he mentions that though his 'morale' is very good his health is not the best. I encourage everyone to keep writing him. He is very mucb looking forward to his release on the 7th of October, let's not forget that.
